The acrobatic dance of a bird’s flight has always left me captivated. These qualities of birds reflect my interests in painting. The suspension of the wood panels out from the wall gives a sense of weightlessness, like a soaring bird. The repetition of color that weave through the painting creates a movement of a spiraling, circling, and swirling flight path of a bird, it’s feathers, and wind.
The color and texture of a bird and it’s feathers relate to the variety of marks in my paintings; from the soft spread of color that brings out an airy quality, to the forceful, scratchy marks that become the marks of the bird’s beak and claws. The layering of colors, marks, and grain of the wood create a fluctuation between these layers, making the surface difficult to locate. I am interested in the idea that, a painting is a bird, and a bird is a painting.
